Vegetation Management Project Update For August 2022

In 2019, Southern Marin Fire Protection District’s Vegetation Management Program was established with the passing of Measure U. The Southern Marin Fire Protection District has worked to identify hazards relating to wildfire for the City of Sausalito and the communities of Tam Valley, Homestead Valley, Strawberry, Almonte, and Tiburon. A budget of $1,000,000 was established for the overall progress. With the creation of Southern Marin Fire's Vegetation Management Program, numerous projects and programs were created to help and protect the citizens within the District. 

PROJECTS AND INITIATIVES UPDATE FOR AUGUST 2022

Chipper Days SMFD:

  • Southern Marin Fire Protection District received 9 chipper requests.

Chipper Days MVFD:

  • Mill Valley Fire Department received 37 chipper requests.

    Firewise Communities SMFD:

    • Vegetation Management Specialist Jesse Figoni held a community meeting for the De Silva Island Firewise community. The meeting was held due to the recent fire that took place adjacent to the community. The goal was to discuss current and future vegetation management projects that will reduce fire hazards in and around their neighborhood.
    • Vegetation Management Specialist Jesse Figoni attended a meeting with the Homestead Valley Firewise Community to discuss current and future vegetation management projects to reduce risk in and around their Firewise community.

    Firewise Communities MVFD:

    • Vegetation Management Specialist Jesse Figoni and NRG Coordinator Leah Curtis gave a presentation to the Scott Highlands Firewise community regarding Defensible Space, evacuation information, community refuge areas, Nixle & Alert Marin, go-bags, chipper program, and the MWPA Mill Valley Sheltered Fuel Break.

    Other Information SMFD:

    • Vegetation Management Specialist Jesse Figoni assisted Tiburon Fire Department with their chipper day at Blackie’s Pasture for the month of August.
    • Vegetation Management Specialist Jesse Figoni coordinated the annual weed whacking of a City of Sausalito parcel behind MLK Park/The New Village School to reduce hazardous vegetation.
    • Vegetation Management Specialist Jesse Figoni and Wildfire Mitigation Specialist Madison Mead attended PG&E Wildfire Safety Webinar regarding their Community Wildfire Safety Program.
    • Vegetation Management Specialist Jesse Figoni held a community meeting for the De Silva Island residents due to the recent fire that occurred. The goal was to discuss current and future vegetation management projects that will reduce fire hazards in and around their community.
    • Vegetation Management Specialist Jesse Figoni attended the Greater Ross Valley Shaded fuel break site visit and review of current and future locations.

    Other Information MVFD:

    • Vegetation Management Specialist Jesse Figoni coordinated tree work along Camino Alto, Mill Valley. This included the removal of dead or dying trees, the removal of fallen branches and limbing up branches.
    • Vegetation Management Specialist Jesse Figoni continued to monitor and supervise the work on the MWPA Mill Valley Sheltered Fuel Break. The areas include Del Casa Drive, Fairway Drive, Marlin Fire Road, Glen Drive Fire Road and Heather Way.
    • Vegetation Management Specialist Jesse Figoni assisted Fire Inspector Mike St. John regarding a vegetation management project that reduced hazardous vegetation on a newly acquired parcel for the City of Mill Valley on Greenwood Way.
    • Vegetation Management Specialist Jesse Figoni coordinated the annual weed whacking of Blithedale Ridge.
