Neighborhood Response Groups (NRGs) are grassroots-led neighborhoods that prepare as a community for largescale emergencies, such as earthquakes and floods.  NRG members take responsibility to prepare themselves as best they can and to help each other as neighbors. The strength of the program is based on the social cohesion of neighbors who have a good reason to get to know each other despite  busy lives – to help look out for one another and their families when or if disaster strikes.  We create the village again. Each group of 15-20 homes has a team of Block Captains to look after the residents within their block.

Getting to know our neighbors provides us with information on who might need help and who is able to provide help if a major disaster occurs.

Neighbors, led by CERT members and Block Captains, can help with the following:

  • Administer basic first aid if someone is injured or turn off utilities if there is a gas leak
  • Assist neighbors with special needs (Access & Functional Needs –AFN)
  • Check on children waiting at home for parents to return from work
  • Check to make sure no neighbor is overlooked.
