Fire Prevention Division

The Southern Marin Fire Prevention Division is a dedicated team that provides fire prevention services to the City of Mill Valley, City of Sausalito, and portions of the County of Marin and the Town of Tiburon. This division operates under the guidance of Fire Marshal Fred Hilliard and adheres to the 2022 California Fire Code (effective January 1st, 2023), as amended by the respective jurisdictions.

The Prevention Division's responsibilities encompass a wide range of disciplines, including plan reviews, permitting, construction inspections, occupancy compliance, and residential inspections. Inspectors are assigned tasks based on their individual areas of expertise, ensuring a comprehensive and specialized approach to fire prevention.

In addition to its core duties, the Prevention Division plays a crucial role in community risk reduction through public education, fire and life safety system evaluations, and code enforcement. Community Risk Reduction (CRR) is a proactive approach that involves identifying and prioritizing risks, threats, and hazards, followed by implementing and evaluating strategies to mitigate their impact. Through collaborative efforts with fire staff, city leaders, and the community, the Prevention Division enhances resilience and improves preparedness before and during emergency events.

By providing these essential fire prevention services to multiple jurisdictions, the Southern Marin Fire Prevention Division contributes to the overall safety and well-being of the communities it serves.

The fire prevention division is guided by the adoption of the current 2022 California Fire Code (effective January 1st, 2023) as it was amended separately by both the Southern Marin Fire District and the City of Mill Valley Fire Department prior to consolidation.
