In December 2022, Marin LAFCo approved the application for the annexation of the City of Mill Valley's Fire & EMS services.  The Mill Valley Fire Department was dissolved and consolidated into the Southern Marin Fire Protection District on July 1, 2023.

In addition to our own area, the District provides emergency response services to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Muir Beach, and the Muir Woods National Monument through a contract with the US Department of the Interior. The District also provides a regional rescue unit which serves all of the above areas, the Tiburon Peninsula, and the Golden Gate Bridge area.

The Fire District, in 2015, contracted with CityGate Associates, LLC, for the purposes of conducting a Fire & EMS Deployment Analysis, or Standards of Response Coverage (SOC) Report. Completed in 2016 the Report, Volume 1 & 2, are linked below.

In early 2024, the District again contracted with CityGate Associates, LLC, to conduct a master plan analysis, which includes an updated SOC Analysis and Report.  The final report will be used to inform the next Strategic Planning Process in late 2024.  The final Master Plan Report, Volumes 1 & 2, will be published to the website when completed.
