Home MenuFire-Smart Landscaping Professional Certification
The Plant Nursery Certification Program will assist the fire prevention division by increasing the likelihood that residents will make fire-smart decisions when landscaping their properties. Plant Nurseries within Southern Marin Fire District (SMFD) will be given a list of fire-smart vegetation characteristics and a copy of our defensible space guidelines that they will agree to promote. Plant Nurseries that agree to our program’s conditions will receive defensible space education from one of the SMFD fire inspectors once per year and will receive a framed certificate that they can show their customers.
What a "certified" plant nursery can receive:
-
Provide your community with the most up-to-date defensible space education.
-
An SMFD fire inspector will walk you through Fire District's local guidelines and requirements
-
You will learn what SMFD fire inspectors check for in Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) areas during an annual defensible space inspections.
-
SMFD will provide a copy of the current SMFD local 2022 Fire Code ordinance, SMFD Vegetation Management Plan standard 220, and Fire-Hazardous/ Fire-Resistive Plant Characteristics and Vegetation List
-
-
Receive prevention supplies for your nursery:
-
Signs
-
Pamphlets
-
Props
-
-
Free one-hour education for staff from a Certified Fire Inspector per year
-
Help the Fire Department reduce hazards in our community.

Receive a framed “Fire Smart Landscape Professional” certificate signed by District's Fire Chief and Fire Marshal.
NOTE: These certificates are given to establishments and not to individual licensed landscape contractors. In alignment with the FireSAFE Marin page on landscape contractors, SMFD encourages all residents to find a licensed landscape professional by visiting the Northern California Landscape Contractors Association (NCLCA) website to find a contractor.
