Fire safety education isn’t just for school children. Teenagers, adults, and the elderly are also at risk in fires. During the month of October, Southern Marin Fire District took time to coordinate with local elementary schools as well as host a Fire Station Open Houses Event in hopes to get the community more engaged in preventing fires.
In a fire, mere seconds can mean the difference between a safe escape and a tragedy. During the month of October, Southern Marin Fire District coordinated with local elementary schools to teach kindergarten and first grade classes simple lessons regarding fire prevention and education. The events were well received by students and staff at all schools and were a successful return to Fire Prevention Week outreach, the first of which SMFD has delivered since 2019. The priority for 2024 will be to re-engage schools we have not reached since 2019 or in 2023.
On October 28, 2023, Southern Marin Fire District hosted a Fire Station Open Houses event at all five fire stations within the District. The Open House event was an opportunity for the public to meet their local operations, prevention, and administrative staff members. This event was marketed online via e-newsletters, social media and NextDoor as well as via traditional postcard mailer. The event was free to attend and open to all ages.
Each station open house included an opportunity to:
- Learn age-appropriate fire & life safety skills.
- Watch a demo of the special firefighting clothes (turnouts), hose.
- View fire apparatus (fire engine, fire truck, hazmat, rescue) and equipment.
- Collect SMFD plastic firefighter hats, keychains, and more!
- Ask questions and learn more about the District.
Southern Marin Fire District is happy to announce the Fire Station Open Houses Event was a huge success and every station was filled with residents, young families, and visitors of the District.
Thank you to all our staff, volunteers, community partners, Board Directors, District Supervisor, Mayors and residents for making it a fun opportunity to share fire prevention and education.
