Alternate energy systems cover the installation of all solar or photovoltaic (PV) systems and power walls or electrical storage system (ESS). These installations have a wide range of fire code requirements that the inspector and plan review must confirm are met prior to allowing for the inspection to be finalized.

A close-in inspection is conducted as a hold prior to closing in newly constructed or remodeled interior walls. This allows for the inspector to review the scope of the work as it was determined in the provided plans. The calculations of a remodel, addition, or new build are vital in determining if a building requires to be equipped with fire sprinklers. For residential properties in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) this is a moment for the inspector to verify that there is proper defensible space.

A rough hydro inspection (also call a rough-in or just hydro) is similar to a close-in inspection listed above. Yet, this rough hydro is also a pressure test for the approved fire sprinkler system that has been installed. This provides a chance for the inspector to verify quality of work and compare installed pipes to those in the system design. 

 COMMERCIAL FIRE SPRINKLERS & ALARMS:

To prepare for a successful final inspections, all testing records of of the fire sprinkler and fire alarm systems are required to be provided to the District for review prior to final inspection. This can be done by providing the fire contractors with the SMFD Requirement Letter that will guide them on the submission process. Please send a copy of this letter to all fire system contractors involved with the property.

A final inspection (or fire final) is the hold placed on a project with any fire suppression or notification system included. These final inspections require that all the plan reviewer's comments and requirements are met and that the system is functioning to Nation Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards and the California Fire Code (CFC). 

In addition, residential properties are required to submit a vegetation management plan (VMP) to be approved. This VMP is required to be in use at the final inspection.

Fire alarm inspections are required to approve the final installation of a new or upgraded fire alarm in a commercial building. These systems are required to be monitored by a remote monitoring station. This type of inspection is required for all approved and permitted installations.

Hood and duct inspections are provided for ANSUL style suppression systems over commercial grade kitchens. These engineered systems are required to meet the specific code requirements for spacing and layout design of appliances. These inspection allow for the inspector to confirm that all the appropriate elements of this system activate and function as required.
